Image size recommendations
Using the right image dimensions keeps your store looking sharp and loading fast. Oversized images slow down page speed and hurt conversion; undersized images look blurry on high-resolution screens. Use the sizes below as a guide when preparing images for your Fuel theme.
Recommended sizes by image type
| Image type | Recommended size | Aspect ratio | Max file size |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hero / slideshow banner | 1920 × 800 px (landscape) or 1920 × 1080 px (full-screen) | 16:9 or 2.4:1 | 500 KB |
| Product images | 2000 × 2000 px minimum | 1:1 (square) | 1 MB |
| Collection thumbnails | 1200 × 1200 px | 1:1 (square) | 500 KB |
| Image with text sections | 1200 × 900 px | 4:3 | 400 KB |
| Blog post featured image | 1200 × 630 px | 1.91:1 | 300 KB |
| Logo | 400 × 160 px maximum | Your logo’s natural ratio | 100 KB |
| Favicon | 32 × 32 px | 1:1 | 10 KB |
File format tips
- JPG — Best for photographs and hero images. Use 80–90% quality to balance sharpness and file size.
- PNG — Use only for images that need a transparent background (e.g. logo on a dark header). PNG files are larger, so avoid them for full-width banners.
- WebP — Shopify automatically converts uploaded images to WebP for browsers that support it, so you don’t need to convert files yourself.
Shopify’s built-in image handling
Shopify automatically resizes and optimises images after upload, so you don’t need to resize every image manually. However, starting with the correct dimensions and a clean high-resolution source ensures the best result — Shopify can scale down but cannot add detail that wasn’t there to begin with.
For product images in particular, using consistent dimensions (e.g. all 2000 × 2000 px square) creates a uniform grid on collection pages and avoids layout shifts.
